Camping Equipment
Planning on a camping trip soon?
Wondering if you should rent or buy camping equipment?
After reading this article you will be better able to decide whether renting or buying is better for you.
You may think it wise to make a trip to a sporting goods store, but you have another option. If this is your first encounter with camping you may want to consider renting your accessories rather than buy them. There are pros and cons to buying or renting equipment. We will first list the pros and cons of buying equipment.
Buy Camping Gear
The biggest argument against buying equipment is the price especially if you are starting from no supplies at all. You can find affordable tents or sleeping bags if you buy on the lower end of available prices.
Look for camping equipment retailers who sell camping gear at near wholesale prices. If you are a member of Sam's Club or Cosco's, those are two places to check first.
On the pro side of buying your own camping equipment is you will be ready to go at a moment's notice if you decide to go again. You will be able to go as often as you want.
It will be more cost effective to buy your equipment if you decide to make several camping trips a year.
You also have the option of buying your basic camping gear and renting larger equipment such as tents or mobile camping vehicles.
For example, you may want to buy your sleeping bags and rent a tent the first few times just to make sure you love the experience and will be going often.
Buying your own sleeping bags gives you the option of softness, color and size. You may also want to purchase your back packs if you plan on doing lots of hiking.
Rent Camping Gear
You also have the option of renting all of your gear especially if you're not sure you'll be going again. There are some pros and cons in the decision to rent camping gear.
One of the biggest cons to renting camping gear is the limited selection of equipment available. Suppliers may only carry tents, coolers, and hot plates.
Some may also supply sleeping bags.
On the positive side of renting camping equipment is it is more affordable than buying. You can shop around for bargains in renting equipment because suppliers have varying rental fees. You can rent camping supplies for as long as 1 day and up to 30 days.
Another plus for renting your equipment is it will also save you from finding storage space in your home.
In Conclusion
We have discussed the number of advantages and disadvantages to both buying and renting your camping supplies.
One option we have not discussed is borrowing camping equipment from a friend or relative. This is an excellent way to try a camping trip for very little cost out of pocket.
You will have the chance to decide if you want to pursue camping as a family vacation before buying or renting camping equipment. Happy camping!
