So, What Is Link Dilution?

Well then, lets get straight into this, because I want to make an immediate impression. Link dilution is something you absolutely must understand if you want to make the most out of link building.

Most people know that too many page links are not good, but what a lot of people don't realize is the amount of words on a page is an important factor too.

Words per link is a massive factor, which I'm going to talk about soon, but first we will cover the basics, in case you don't know how link dilution works

It's something that is talked about but often either not understood, or the credence isn't put into the theory that perhaps it should have. It's something that a lot of smart people are ignoring and it's at their own peril.

The Wrong Sites = Less Productivity

The more links that are on a page - The less those links are worth. Now you probably know this anyway, but have you ever stopped to consider the implications of how this works? Do you evaluate which sites you used based on link dilution?

Most people don't, and because they don't they maybe using some sites more frequently than they should, when other sites may actually have far more to offer them.

This is particularly bad at an article directory, where you may have only one or two links, but if they have a hundred other on the page, it means YOURS is worth less - Not Good!

The basic premise works like this:

It means that all things being equal - You should submit articles to directories that show less links on their pages as your links will be less diluted.

There is a question as to whether internal links are as much a factor as external links and it's obvious that they are valued different by humans, so the phds at the search engines most probably weight them different as well, but there is a school of thought that too many internal links are costly.

Either way, the more links are on a page like and article directory, the less likely someone will follow your link to your site, when there is so many too choose from. Does this include search engines? - Yes!

Many people believe that when a page has too many links that the search engines wont follow them all, meaning your link may not count or get found. So by taking this into consideration we might change our article marketing strategy and submit our content to article directories with less link dilution.

Buzzle only allow one link per article, but they add several internal links to your articles, however they have very few external links on the page, so in theory, their site would be good to use, especially if it turns out an internal link is not as big a diluting factor as an external link.

SO...

*On an article directory page:

*Links internally on a page = not great, but not terrible

*Link outbound on a page = Very diluting and the more the worse.

So a high pr page might not be so valuable to you if your link is one of a hundred, but far more valuable if it is only one of 10. Simple right?

What Is A Page Worth?

So here's a theoretical formula for you (just a theory)

*A page with one outbound link has a link value of 100%

You get all the link juice

*A page with 2 outbound links has each link with 50% of the value each

You share the link juice with the other link

A page with 2 out bound links + 10 internal links has each outbound link worth 33% and The collective internal links worth 33%

You share with the outbound links and a little bit with the other internal links

A page with 40 out bound links + 50 internal links has each out bound link worth only 15%

You don't get much value for the link at all here, 90 links and you get a tiny fraction of the link juice.

The more links out bound, the less each one is worth.

Links Per Word

A page with 500 words is worth more than a page with only 100 words. That's pretty simple! But have you thought about how this might affect the values of a link?

A page with 2000 words is authoritative and deserves respect, so when that page has a link on it that link must surely be worth more than a page with 70 words. For this reason we must take that into account when looking at link dilution as well. Because a 1000 word page with 20 outbound links is probably worth as much as a 100 word page that only has 2 outbound links.

Because the value is so equal.

This is why longer articles are valued higher by search engines, because the longer an article the far less likely said article is going to be spam. So, when you have a 1000 or 2000 word article you immediately have weight.

So it's worth considering this when writing descriptions for social bookmarking sites, as a longer description means more weight can be placed on that link. It also brings us to an interesting view on forums.

What Is A Forum Link Worth?

If you get a forum link then most likely your on a page with few words and a lot of links. This means your link won't be worth much. However when you add a response on a page where each other comment is rich and long, you actually benefit from their hard work.

But it can work in reverse...

It means if you write a careful 200 word response on a blog comment or a forum, your signature link is diluted when a person leave a one line "thank for this post" spam comment. It hurts the value of your signature link.

It's a delicate balance.

For this reason, forum admins and many blog owners are deleting posts that are one liners from members that haven't established a presence. This is great for genuine link builders, becasue you will get more value for your signature links when every other comment is longer and richer.

A higher words per link structure, that better the value of your link.

As For The Figures I've Stated..

We don't know anything exactly. We can only estimate what values are placed on the number of links. As you can see, the more internal links the less value your link may have - These numbers are by no means exact and are just an educated guess.

In Conclusion

So, what is link dilution? - Remember one thing is for sure link value or no link value, the more links that are on a page mean less people are likely to click your link and that becomes a traffic issue which is a whole other story.

The Solution?

Only add your articles to sites that have a couple (less than 15) internal links per page, and NO outbound dofollow links per page. This will mean your article's links will contain maximum value.
