The truth about link building
There are a lot of conflicting opinions when it comes to link building. Because of all this information it can be hard to find the truth about link building. I wanted to write this article to clear up a couple of misconceptions and shed some light on the misnomers.
You no doubt know that to get any traffic of note, you need to build a lot of links back to your target of choice.
In general, the more links you have, the more traffic you'll get. I don't necessarily disagree with that sentiment, but it's a little less cut and dry than that. There are other immediate factors that come into play, especially if there is competition for a particular niche - Quality counts.
So if quality is a major factor, what about page rank, link dilution and relevancy?
Well, they are all sort of individual questions, but we can deconstruct them and in the process answer them with generality and not lose too many specifics.
The fact is we can't tell how the search engines value each individual property, but we know that no one specific value will win out, not even page rank.
Here is what we do know....
1. Link Value
This is the page rank of the page that the link is on, the higher the better. If you get links from valuable pages, then the search engines will respect that link.
The more respected the page that links to you then the more valuable that link is. This is why links from link directories aren't worth much, because the page they come from is worthless. But a link from a page rich in content is worth far more, especially if the page is high pr.
2. Link Relevancy
The relevancy of the link and the text around, the page it's on and the relevancy of the site in general. For this reason there is value in finding links from sites of similar subjects.
If you own a site about cows and you get an inbound link from a page about motor cars, then the value of the link will lack relevancy, but a link from a page about bovine technologies will be worth a lot for the relevancy of it.
3. Link Volume
The total amount of links counts too, so a large volume is always going to be advantageous over less. Any site with 1000,000 links is going to have some presence over and above many other sites with small numbers, so size does matter.
4. Link Variety
All things being equal, the more variety of links there are the better. So if you had 300 links from 300 sites it would be better than 300 links from 20 sites.
In a natural world wide web and hyperlink could end up anywhere, so the more variety you have, the more natural your efforts look and the more valuable your pages become.
5. Link Nature
If your links are not organic in nature they will look spammy. You must be careful not to do too many too quick and too many in one spot. You must also imitate the way a link would naturally appear, if people were spreading it on their own favor.
Too many internet marketers try and use the same anchor text for a link, over and over again.
Bad Idea!
This looks spammy. The more variety you use in your hyperlink anchor text, the more it looks like many people are spreading your link using their own description - Not just you.
Keep it looking natural to keep value.
6. Dofollow
Dofollow links count and nofollow don't. For this reason it is best to get many from dofollow source and only a few from nofollow sources to look natural.
A link that isn't followed by the search engines is a backlink that doesn't count. So dofollow links are seen to be better as they get you both traffic and "counted" links.
That isn't to say you shouldn't get a few nofollow links, because you should, even if only to look natural, after all if you had 10,000 dofollow links and no nofollow ones it just wouldn't look natural
Would it?
In Conclusion
What a lot of people wont tell you is the values of these change often, so 20 links from relevant pr 3 sites, may beat 1000 links from irrelevant sites on one day, but not on the next. This is why volume will often win out in the end, because you can increase volume infinitely, but quality is hard to come by.
High PR link sellers don't like that fact known.
The best link building strategy is to source a variety of links from many source, including relevant, high pr and dofollow.
If you really want to dominate you can't stop link building, so consider setting link building goals each day, to keep up a decent pace. Hard work and diligence are worth everything in link building.
