So, just what are these Omega-3 Fats?

In really simple terms, they are a fat which we need, our bodies love and we usually don't get enough of. For this reason I think, it's worth writing this article to shed some light on the importance of omega 3 fatty acids and why we should not fear all fats, because some of them really are essential to good health.

Found in Good Places

You will mostly find omega fats in high quality, whole foods, which is where you pretty much find all good nutrients and for this reason I caution the use of supplements that "include" omega fats, but supplements that are entirely consistent of omega 3 fats are ok, and yes - there is a difference.

I'm ever the skeptic

Omega 3 fats have been used as a bit of a catch cry lately for health food retailers pushing their wares, unfortunately the usual misinformation surrounds these benevolent fats as does with all the health foods of the day.

One of the typical endorsements seen frequently as of late is a product claiming to "include" omega 3's in it. This can be wildly misleading for the consumer looking to boost their omega 3 intake for both the mind and body health.

The problem is I've seen a leading pasta brand touting the fact that they have omega 3's in their product but the average amount per serve was 100 milligrams. At this rate you'd need to eat 80 bowls of pasta to get your daily recommended amount of at least eight grams.

Whole Foods - The Foods

The best way to consume omega 3's is to eat them through normal whole foods, you'll save money on ridiculously expensive supplementation and you'll get the best sources available.

What are the best omega 3 sources?

Wild salmon, flax seeds, sunflower seeds, walnuts and olive oil are the best sources of omega 3 fatty acids. If you regularly consume small servings of these then you'll meet all your requirements.

You can buy cold pressed flax seed oil in the refrigerator at health food stores, which is great for use in salad dressings, just do not cook with it or you'll ruin the biological structure of the fats.

It's Worth Adding Them To Your Diet

By actively seeking to keep good fats in your diets you can boost your immune system, protect valuable muscle tissue and boost your brain power.
